Projector for GNOME Events Box

The GTK+ Hackfest has its first positive result already: The GNOME Events Box got a brand new DLP projector. Decision was made to buy one, since renting a projector for a week costs about 200 EUR, wereas you get entry level projectors for only 600 EUR. The Foundation's brand new projector was about 580,99 EUR - including shipment (projector with bag and cables, back side).

Incredible how much technology advanced since I had a projector into my own hands for the last time: It's "just" a 2400 Lumen projector, still it produces a clear and cripsy picture under day light conditions. Awesome.

I also like the fact, that Acer was that kind, to ship not only a German power cable, but also some british and a third one I cannot identify. It looks like an Euro plug with a third pin:

Some stange cable

Update: Seems the third cable has a Swiss plug.

That's an old style Italian plug.

Looks like a Swiss plug to me.

I can confirm that in Italy we use that kind of plugs, and I think that it is the same also in Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Austria and so on..
Actually it seems that in the EU the "different" plugs are just the German (Schuco) and the English ones :)

The one in the picture looks like a swiss plug. Austria definitly does not use such a plug. Used are Euro and Schuko plugs.

@Gaël:
Why old? It seems a normal Italian plug.

@Ulisse:
I don't know what they use in Switzerland but in France they use Schuko plugs like in Germany.

Roland commented on March 7, 2008 at 11:15 p.m.

@Marco:
Original Schuko plugs are not used in France, but most plugs nowadays are compatible with both sockets - see "Type E and F hybrid" at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic...

Stéphane Graber commented on March 7, 2008 at 11:25 p.m.

That's indeed a standard swiss plug.

Gaël Varoquaux commented on March 7, 2008 at 11:29 p.m.

@Marco
I have the feeling the 3 pin plug is slowly being phased out for compatibility with the European standards (2 pins for 10Amps, and 3 pin type E and F hybrid for 16Amps). Maybe I am biased, because I work in a physics lab, but in Florence I see almost only these plugs, and sometimes adaptors to 3 pin in line Italian-style sockets.
I find this conversation about plugs amusing :-)

Yes, especially as I wanted to present the Foundation's new and shiny projector, which gives us some independance for gatherings and trade-show booths.

Already see the GNOME booth overrun by new users, attracted by the fancy animations shown.

we need standards :)

No, they will be attracted by discussions about plugs :P
